In the Southeast, spring is right around the corner! Trees are starting to flower, Daffodils are in full bloom, what else could you ask for? How about a green lawn? That will happen soon enough. Before your Bermuda or Zoysia lawn green up, there is something that you can do to really help have a healthy lawn in 2013. AERATE!!
What is aeration?
Technically speaking, aeration is the naturally occurring process of air exchange between the soil and its surrounding atmosphere. Practically speaking, aeration is the process of mechanically removing small plugs of thatch and soil from the lawn to improve natural soil aeration.
What are the benefits?
- Improved air exchange between the soil and atmosphere (the grass can breath better!!)
- Enhanced water uptake (the grass can drink easier!!)
- Improved fertilizer uptake (the grass can eat easier!!)
- Reduced water runnoff or puddling
- Stronger turf grass
- Reduced soil compaction
How often should you aerate a lawn?
Most lawns benefit from aeration annually. Cool season grasses like Fescue can benefit from a 2x per year aeration. Fall is ideal for over seeding and again in early spring if you have bare areas in your lawn. Warm season grasses like Bermuda and Zoysia perform best when done in early Spring.
